From humble home prayer meetings to a grand edifice Faith Tabernacle Church of Prayer stands as a testament to unwavering faith. This church isn’t just a building it’s a living legacy. It’s a story etched in the hearts of generations.
Faith Tabernacle Church of Prayer in Washington DC boasts a rich history. It began in 1922 with Reverend Estella Black. She arrived from North Carolina seeking a United Holy Church. Finding none she started a fellowship. Years of prayer and dedication followed. In March 1925 Bishop General Johnson Branch officially organized Faith Tabernacle. Reverend Black became its first pastor.
Her powerful sermons drew many to the church. Faith Tabernacle quickly outgrew its first location at 420 V Street NW. The congregation purchased land at 49th and Central Avenue NE. Sadly Reverend Black passed away before the new building was complete. The church eventually moved to 1015 D Street NE. Its first service in this new building was December 31 1948. Bishop Branch dedicated it January 9 1949.
Leadership changed over the years. Elder Nelson Miller served as District Elder before Reverend Joseph Thomas Bowens. Reverend Bowens a gifted preacher and trombonist led the church through a period of significant growth. They needed more space again so the church moved to its current location at 300 A Street NE in 1964. Bishop Jeremiah M McLaurin led the dedication service. Reverend Bowens served for over four decades. He even served as President of the United Holy Church of America.
After Reverend Bowens’s passing in 1995 Elder Lorraine Barber served as interim pastor. Then in 1997 Reverend Dr James R Love Sr became pastor. He served for ten years. A period of transition followed with District Elders guiding the congregation. Finally in 2010 Elder L Frazier White II was elected pastor. A historic ceremony united Faith Tabernacle with Faith Temple in 2011.
The site itself holds even more history. It’s been used for Christian worship since 1853. It was then known as Waugh Methodist Church. This location has stood through fires expansions and renovations. It’s truly hallowed ground. A place of faith community and unwavering devotion. The legacy of Faith Tabernacle Church of Prayer continues to this day a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring power of community.
