Did Jozef Rokicki ever imagine a stele erected in his honor? Here at the Józef Rokicki Stele in Warsaw, we unravel the story of this complex figure. Józef Wacław Rokicki, also known as “Karol” or “Michał,” was a lieutenant colonel in the Polish Army and the Home Army. He served as the commander of the Mokotów district during the Warsaw Uprising. The Józef Rokicki Stele commemorates his leadership and sacrifice. Born in 1894, Rokicki’s military career began in the Russian army. He later joined the Polish Army, serving in various roles before becoming the commander of the 9th Armored Battalion in Lublin. During World War II, Rokicki became the chief commander of the National Military Organization (NOW). He played a key role in merging NOW with the Home Army, demonstrating his commitment to a unified resistance against the German occupation. During the Warsaw Uprising, he commanded the Mokotów district and later the 10th Infantry Division of the Home Army. His decision to evacuate Mokotów on September 26, 1944, remains controversial. It led to a negative assessment by a military commission. After the uprising, Rokicki was held as a German prisoner of war. He later emigrated, returning to Poland in 1957. He worked in various administrative positions until his retirement in 1972. Józef Rokicki died of a heart attack in 1976. The Józef Rokicki Stele serves as a poignant reminder of his contributions and the difficult choices faced during wartime. It stands as a testament to a man who dedicated his life to serving Poland. His legacy continues to spark discussion.
