“Sports codes and recreation all year round.” Does this sound tempting? Well, welcome to the Petone Recreation Ground. This open space offers a variety of activities. It is located in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand. Framed by pōhutukawa trees, Petone Recreation Ground spans seven hectares.

Let’s step back in time. The first recorded match here was in 1951. Hutt Valley played Wanganui in the 1950/51 Hawke Cup. Imagine the excitement. People gathered around the pitch.

Later, in the 1991/92 Shell Trophy, the ground hosted its first first-class match. Wellington played Otago. Otago won by 8 wickets. Feel the tension of the game. Hear the cheers of the crowd.

In the 1998/99 Shell Trophy, Wellington played Auckland. The match ended in a draw. Wellington Women also used this ground. It was their home venue between 1998 and 2002. Since the 2015/16 season, some Plunket Shield matches have been played here. This happens when Basin Reserve is unavailable.

Now, let’s look around. The Petone Recreation Ground offers more than just sports. It has a grandstand. Imagine sitting there watching a game. There are also toilets and changing rooms for convenience. Families will appreciate the playground and skate ramp. These provide fun for children of all ages.

Need some refreshments? You are in luck. A food stall operates on site. There is even free parking. The main entrance is opposite the Petone Working Men’s Club. It is located at 47 Udy Street. Petone Recreation Ground is open all day. It is open every day of the year.

Getting here is easy. Hutt Road is only a 5-minute walk. Cuba Street at Burnham Street is an 8-minute walk away. You can also reach the ground from Petone Station. It is a 14-minute walk. Several bus lines stop near the ground. These include the 83, 150, and N8. The HVL train line also stops nearby.

The Petone Recreation Ground is more than just a sports field. It’s a place for community. It’s a place for recreation. It’s a place where memories are made. As we conclude our visit, remember the games played. Remember the laughter shared. Remember the beauty of this space.
