Landing on the edge of the nation’s capital, a small airfield holds a surprisingly rich history. Potomac Airfield, nestled in the Friendly CDP of Maryland, isn’t your typical airport. It’s a place where history, humor, and a touch of the bizarre intertwine. Potomac Airfield, also known as Potomac Airport, serves the Washington D.C. metro area. Interestingly, it’s privately owned by Copley Investments, but open for public use. Don’t expect to catch a commercial flight here though. Potomac Airfield is dedicated to general aviation. The airport’s history is a colorful tapestry woven with intriguing anecdotes. Did you know that in the 1980s, the access road was intentionally kept in rough shape? This was a strategic move to prevent Soviet tanks from reaching the airfield in case of an invasion. The airfield even played a role during the Iran-Contra affair. A Maule aircraft, allegedly involved in the scandal, was reportedly shot down near the airfield, freeing up a space in the round hangar. The very identifier, VKX, has a quirky origin. Apparently, it was hastily assigned when the FAA’s Spectrum Engineering threatened to make one up themselves if another division didn’t produce an identifier by noon. Potomac Airfield even boasts its own peculiar mythology. Its humorous self-proclaimed history claims that the Wright brothers, upon their Kitty Hawk flight, were met with a nonchalant “Duh. We’ve been flying out of here for hundreds of years” from Potomac Airfield pilots. This whimsical narrative continues, tracing the airfield’s origins back to pre-Cambrian times, when native tribes supposedly built a landing strip for the gods. Even the great astronomer Ptolemy is said to have frequented the airfield, using it as a resting spot during his visits to Washington D.C. Today, Potomac Airfield stands as a testament to its resilient and unique character. It’s a place where the stories, both real and imagined, take flight, offering a fascinating glimpse into a lesser-known corner of aviation history. Remember, if you’re planning to fly in or out, you’ll need a regional security clearance due to its location within the Washington D.C. Flight Restricted Zone.
