Králův Dvůr

Could a medieval court truly vanish? Here at Králův Dvůr, that question hangs in the air. Králův Dvůr translates to “King’s Court”. It whispers of a royal presence, a vanished palace. The first written record of Králův Dvůr dates back to 1394. It was a dramatic scene. King Wenceslaus IV found himself captured by Bohemian nobles, right here. But the story goes back further. In the mid-13th century, King Wenceslaus I likely built a court here. It was a medieval structure. Imagine the bustling activity, the royal entourage, the intrigue of court life. This court became the town’s namesake. Centuries later, in 1585, the Lobkowicz family transformed the medieval court. They rebuilt it as a grand Renaissance castle. Králův Dvůr Castle became a symbol of their power and influence. The castle saw many changes. A devastating fire in 1712 destroyed a wing. Later, in the 18th century, it underwent a Baroque makeover, likely designed by the renowned architect Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer. This gave the castle the appearance it largely retains today, although it stands in need of significant restoration. The castle’s history took a sad turn in 1860. It was sold to Emil Egon Fürstenberg. He neglected the once-proud structure, using it merely as a warehouse. After World War II, the castle became state property, continuing its ignominious life as a storage space. Even its garden was sacrificed, becoming a path for the D5 highway. Finally, in 2000, a private owner purchased Králův Dvůr Castle. Reconstruction is planned. Hopefully, this magnificent building will regain its former glory. Králův Dvůr itself continued to evolve. In 1850, several municipalities merged. Králův Dvůr, Popovice, Karlova Huť, and Křižatky became one. Then, in 1980, Králův Dvůr became a suburb of Beroun. But the spirit of independence prevailed. In 1990, it regained its autonomy. And in 2004, it officially became a town. As you stand here, imagine the echoes of royalty, the clang of industry, and the resilient spirit of a town that keeps reinventing itself. Králův Dvůr.
