Fung Yuen is not one village but five. There is Fung Mei Wai. It was once known as Kau Shi Wai. Then there is Fung Yuen Lo Tsuen, the old village. Lau Hang is another. And do not forget Mak Uk, also known as Mak’s House. Finally, there is Tin Sam.

Back in 1911, Fung Yuen was small. Only 133 people lived here. Sixty of them were men. Much has changed since then.

The area of Fung Yuen Valley gained protection in 1980. It became a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This designation recognized its importance. It is a major breeding site for butterflies. The protected area spans about 43 hectares.

Within this area lies the Fung Yuen Butterfly Reserve. It was established in 2005. The Tai Po Environmental Association runs it. They received funding from the Environment and Conservation Fund. The reserve covers 2 hectares of private land. It is dedicated to the preservation of butterflies.
