Standing before the Emil Pollert Bust, you feel a connection to the past. It’s not just a piece of sculpted stone; it’s a window into a life dedicated to the stage. Emil Pollert, born Emil Popper, was a renowned Czech opera singer, best known for his bass roles at the National Theatre in Prague. His voice, strong and resonant, captivated audiences for over three decades. But Pollert wasn’t just a talented baritone; he was a comedic master. The bust captures the mischievous glint in his eye, hinting at the humor that made him a beloved figure.

Pollert debuted in the dramatic opera “Byl jednou jeden král” and went on to star in classics like “Dalibor,” “Tannhäuser,” “Rusalka,” and “The Bartered Bride.” His Kecal in “The Bartered Bride” became legendary. Critics praised his performance, noting his detailed portrayal of the character. He incorporated singing, acting, gestures, facial expressions, and body positioning, creating a truly unforgettable performance.

In 1927, Pollert received the State Prize for excellent work in the National Theatre. He was a man of many talents, also directing 12 operas and founding an organization for soloists. Tragedy struck in 1935 when Pollert died from a heart attack just before performing in a production of Smetana’s “The Secret.”

This bust, created by sculptor Charles Dvorak, is a tribute to Pollert’s legacy. Look at his strong features and the hint of laughter. They reflect the man who brought joy and laughter to the stage. His story is a reminder that art, like love, transcends time. Even in death, Pollert’s voice continues to echo through the halls of the National Theatre and in the hearts of those who remember his performances.
