Wasn’t it amazing how a simple Bible study group blossomed into a thriving church? Welcome to the Chinese Christian & Missionary Church. Right here in front of us stands a testament to faith perseverance and community. This isn’t just a building it’s a living history.
The Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington DC began humbly. In 1957 a small group of Chinese students gathered for Bible studies. Their meetings took place in the office of International Students Inc on Calvert Street. Imagine their dedication meeting amidst the bustle of Washington DC. Their first Mandarin service took place on August 31 1958 with about twenty attendees. That small seed of faith grew quickly. Soon they needed more space. A move to 5709 16th Street NW marked a significant step forward. The church incorporated officially as the “Chinese Mandarin Church” with Rev Moses Chow as its first pastor.
Growth continued. The church became a beacon for the growing Chinese community. Pastor Chow’s leadership laid a strong foundation. His departure in 1969 led to the appointment of Pastor Fred Cheung. He oversaw an ambitious project the construction of a new sanctuary. The Piney Branch Road location was purchased. The new building was completed in March 1971. A significant moment. The church was renamed the Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington DC.
This wasn’t just about buildings though. The church embraced a spirit of outreach. In 1972 they began overseas mission work. Annual Missions Conferences supported missionaries and sent short-term mission teams. Their local efforts too were remarkable. Branch churches opened in Germantown in 2004 and Clarksburg Maryland in 2008 expanding their influence.
The church continued to expand both physically and spiritually. In 2011 they acquired additional land next to their building. This facilitated further growth and improvement. Their 60th anniversary in 2018 was a huge celebration. They even renovated their entrance added parking and improved accessibility for all.
The church remains vibrant. It’s a community bound by faith. It continues to serve its members. It remains dedicated to the spreading of the Gospel. This building isn’t just a house of worship it’s a living example of faith hope and love. A testament to the power of community and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
