Gazing across the Edo River, we find ourselves at the gateway to Ichikawa. Ichikawa’s story begins long before its official founding in 1934. This area buzzed with activity even 30,000 years ago, as evidenced by discovered stone tools. Imagine the Jomon people creating shell mounds, followed by the Kofun period’s elaborate burial tumuli. Ichikawa held a position of power as the capital of Shimōsa Province during the Nara period. The echoes of Taira Masakado’s rebellion during the Heian period and the clash of clans during the Sengoku period still resonate here. Fast forward to the Meiji Restoration. Ichikawa was considered as a potential site for the new Diet, a vision championed by Katsu Kaishu, who imagined a grand structure mirroring the Houses of Parliament along the Thames. The city’s modern identity began to solidify in 1889 with the establishment of Ichikawa Town. It blossomed into the city we know today through a series of mergers, incorporating Yawata, Nakayama, and Kokubun in 1934, followed by Okashiwa in 1949, Gyotoku in 1955, and Minami-Gyotoku in 1956. Ichikawa’s convenient location, a mere 20 kilometers from Tokyo, has transformed it into a bustling hub within the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area. This proximity has made it a popular residential area. It also fuels its economy as a commercial and industrial center. Today, Ichikawa boasts a population nearing half a million. It stands as a testament to its rich history and strategic importance.
