Established in 1894 the Vienna Cricket and Football-Club boasts a rich history. It’s the second oldest club in Vienna after its rivals First Vienna FC 1894. Austrians affectionately call it Cricketer. Initially popular for cricket and football the club now focuses on athletics and tennis.

The Vienna Cricket and Football-Club’s home is Cricketer-Platz. This stadium stands on Meiereistraße. It wasn’t always there. Originally built in 1904 on Vorgartenstraße it moved. A significant event took place there in 1908. The first international football match between Austria and Germany was played at Cricketer-Platz.

The Vienna Cricket and Football-Club wasn’t just a team. They were pioneers. They organized the Challenge Cup a precursor to the Mitropa Cup. The club won this prestigious competition twice in 1897-98 and 1901-02. They also won seven of eight tournaments held in Vienna before 1900. The club even experimented with rules. They included factors like the beauty of the plays and sportsmanship in their scoring system.

John Gramlick a founder and player was instrumental. He initiated the Challenge Cup aiming to promote football in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. He also donated the trophy. The Vienna Cricket and Football-Club was also involved in founding the Austrian Football Union. They played a crucial role in the development of Austrian football.

The Vienna Cricket and Football-Club played a significant role in Vienna’s football scene. Many players from the club went on to form other teams. Some of Vienna’s most prominent clubs including SK Rapid and FK Austria trace their roots back to the Cricketer. The club’s success attracted large crowds. One match in 1897 drew over 4000 spectators.

However the Vienna Cricket and Football-Club’s football section eventually dissolved in the 1930s. The club continues to thrive though focusing on other sports.
