“A temple with two names?” you might ask. I am here to tell you about Komyoin Temple.

Let’s step into the serene world of Gangyo-ji Temple. It is a Jodo sect temple in Tokyo’s Bunkyo Ward. You can reach it with a short walk northeast from Todaimae Station.

Officially known as Kishozan Komyo-in Gangyo-ji. This temple has a rich history. Gangyo-ji Temple was founded between 1592 and 1596. It was initially built near Edo Castle. In 1607, it moved to Nihonbashi Bakuro-cho. Later in 1616, it relocated to its current location.

There is another version of the story. Some say it was founded in 1494 in Minami-Shinagawa. In 1607, it separated from Shinagawa Gangyo-ji. It was established in Nihonbashi Shinagawa-cho. This is now Nihonbashi Muromachi. Then, in 1657, it moved to Nihonbashi Bakuro-cho. Finally, in 1684, it moved to its present site.

During the Edo period, Gangyo-ji Temple was a temple of considerable importance. The main enshrined deities are Amitabha Triad and Masters Zendo and Honen. Nearby, you will find the University of Tokyo Yayoi Campus. You can also see Saikyo-ji Temple and Nezu Shrine.

Gangyo-ji Temple once had nine sub-temples. These included Jogyo-in and Ganko-in. These were absorbed into the main temple by the early Meiji period.

Gangyo-ji Temple enshrines a wooden Amida Nyorai statue. It is designated as a cultural asset of Bunkyo Ward. The statue’s origin is unclear. It has been part of Gangyo-ji Temple since its move in 1683. Carved from Japanese cypress, it features delicate craftsmanship. The statue is coated with lacquer. It stands 34.2 cm tall.

Made in the late Heian period, it reflects the Jōchō style. This suggests it was created by a central Kyoto sculptor. Its gentle expression and rounded face exude grace. Despite its small size, the statue showcases refined techniques. It embodies the beauty of the Jōchō style. This statue is precious as a Heian period Buddhist sculpture in Bunkyo Ward. Gangyo-ji Temple offers a glimpse into Tokyo’s past. It is a place of peace amid the city’s hustle.
