Hidden beneath the soil of Browns Field lies a secret. A volcanic secret. Two hundred million years ago a massive explosion rocked this very spot. It left behind a maar-diatreme a volcanic crater of sorts. Today Browns Field sits atop this ancient geological marvel. The dark mafic soils are a reminder of that fiery past. Much of the diatreme is buried. It’s hidden under the grass and the landfill that helped create the sporting oval.

Browns Field is more than just a sports ground. It’s a place steeped in history. Long before the Europeans arrived the Kuringgai people called this land home. They lived here for thousands of years. Then in 1822 Thomas Hyndes an emancipated convict settled nearby. He received a large land grant in 1838. He used convict labour to work the land. They supplied timber to the colony.

Later in 1854 John Brown a merchant and timber getter bought the land. Known as Squire Brown he owned a vast area. At his peak he employed one hundred pairs of pit-sawyers. They provided timber for major projects like the Pyrmont and Glebe Island Bridges. The field itself was once dense indigenous forest. Later it became a rubbish tip. Today it’s a vibrant green space.

Browns Field is a haven for nature lovers. Unusual rainforest plants thrive here. The rich volcanic soil and high rainfall support these unique species. Golden sassafras jackwood wild quince and many others flourish. Even the critically endangered scrub turpentine finds a home in this surprisingly lush environment. The area receives an average annual rainfall of 1400mm. That’s thanks to its proximity to the Kissing Point Road weather station.

The animals also thrive in the rainforest’s embrace. Ring-tail and brushtail possums are common. Grey-headed flying foxes also make their home here. Birds abound including rainbow lorikeets Australian king parrots and many more. Powerful owls even nest in the reserve. The iridescent semi-slug a remarkable creature adds to Browns Field’s biodiversity.

Browns Field is a space of contrasts. It’s a place where ancient volcanic activity meets modern recreation. Where indigenous history blends with colonial settlement. Where endangered species find refuge. It’s a place where a football game can be played on land once walked by the Kuringgai. So take a moment to appreciate the richness of Browns Field. It’s a story written in the earth and the sky. A story etched into every blade of grass and soaring bird.
