Pomník strašnického vysílače

The transmitter was equipped with two 40-meter masts. Between them a 60-meter antenna was strung. Imagine the technical prowess needed to create such a system in 1925. The transmitter itself was initially established in 1925. It was more than just a broadcasting station. It was the lifeline of the rebellion. Its broadcasts kept the resistance fighters connected. This allowed the insurgents to organize and fight. German forces attempted to silence the broadcast. On May 6th a German air raid damaged the transmitter. Yet the defiant technicians quickly improvised. They established a makeshift studio within the transmitter’s building. They continued broadcasting within hours. Finally on May 7th at 4:35 pm a backup studio in the Hussite church on Vinohrady took over. After 1948 the transmitter was dismantled. Most of its operating buildings were removed by 2000. Only an air-raid shelter remains. This small monument though serves as a poignant reminder. It commemorates the courage and resourcefulness of those who operated the Strašnice transmitter.
