The Altes Schauspielhaus opened on November 6 1909. Architects Albert Eitel and Eugen Steigleder designed it. It stands on the site of a former legation barracks where Friedrich Schiller once worked. In the 1960s a legendary ensemble performed here. Elisabeth Flickenschildt Edith Heerdegen and Erich Ponto starred. They brought the house back to life. After extensive renovations in 1984 the Altes Schauspielhaus reopened. Elert Bode took over its direction. He restored its reputation.
Today the Altes Schauspielhaus is a vibrant hub. It boasts a demanding repertoire. Classic and contemporary plays are performed. Musical productions enrich the program.
