How did a humble tobacco farm give its name to an entire street? Right here, before you, stands Cedersdals Malmgård. This charming yellow building, with its distinctive gambrel roof, is a rare survivor. It’s a relic of a time when this bustling area was a patchwork of farms and gardens. Cedersdals Malmgård was built in the early 1700s. It wasn’t always known by this name though. Its story is intertwined with the rise and fall of tobacco cultivation in Stockholm. In 1799, Peter Cedergren, a prominent tobacco planter, purchased the property. Cedergren’s “tomter,” as his landholdings were called, flourished. They became a hub for the tobacco trade, with a thriving garden and bustling marketplace. The street that now runs just north of Cedersdals Malmgård, once part of Cedergren’s land, bears his legacy – Cedersdalsgatan. Over time, tobacco farming declined in Stockholm, but Cedersdals Malmgård endured. It even survived a near-demolition in the 1940s. Imagine that, this almost-lost gem, witnessing centuries of change, from tobacco fields to the vibrant city we see today. Look closely, and you can almost see the ghost of Cedergren tending his precious tobacco plants. Their legacy lives on in the name of this street and the enduring charm of Cedersdals Malmgård.
