Gazing across the landscape, can you sense the spirit of Ebenezer Howard here in Edgemead? His vision, born in 19th-century England, sought to create self-contained towns, a stark contrast to the overcrowded cities of the industrial revolution. This vision took root in South Africa thanks to Howard’s friend, Richard Stuttaford. Stuttaford, inspired by Howard’s Garden Cities, brought the concept to the Union Parliament in 1919. Edgemead stands as a testament to this vision. Edgemead’s story began in 1967. Negotiations for a 263-hectare piece of the Plattekloof farm, nestled at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills, concluded successfully. Today, Edgemead encompasses over 340 hectares and over 3,500 families. Edgemead is a carefully planned suburb, a hallmark of the Garden City movement. Cul-de-sacs, curved roads, and strategically placed open spaces and playgrounds contribute to its unique village atmosphere. Even the houses, linked by walls to enhance the streetscape, reflect the emphasis on aesthetics. Edgemead’s first house was sold in 1972 for R14,945. Edgemead is more than just houses; it is a thriving community. From its inception, Edgemead has seen high demand, with the desire for homes consistently exceeding availability. This speaks volumes about its appeal as a place to live. Edgemead boasts a rich history. The first shops at the Edgemead shopping centre opened in 1981. The suburb reached a significant milestone in 1985 with the completion of the 1700th house. Edgemead is not just a residential area. It is home to numerous clubs, societies, and public amenities, all supported by the Garden Cities Trust. This generosity contributes significantly to the sense of community and belonging that residents feel. This support embodies the spirit of Ebenezer Howard’s vision and makes residents proud to call Edgemead home.
