Whispers of “Bungarribee” drift through Doonside, a name echoing the Duruk people’s heritage. Doonside, a suburb west of Sydney’s hustle, holds tales of transformation. Originally a government stock reserve in 1802, Doonside fed cattle and sheep under the watchful eyes of convict herdsmen. Scottish immigrant Robert Crawford carved his mark in 1822, claiming 1,000 acres. He christened it “Hill End,” later Doonside, a name that stuck despite a brief, unpopular stint as “Wolkara” in 1921. Imagine Doonside in 1913: a solitary platform, shrouded in darkness, lit only by a train guard’s lamp. Passengers would signal the driver, a silent plea for a ride. The year 1929 brought electricity, a beacon of progress. Yet, water still flowed from wells, and horse-drawn carts delivered daily sustenance. Doonside’s heart, its railway station, officially opened in 1880, welcoming electric trains in 1955. Edith Crawford, a link to the suburb’s origins, cut the ribbon, a poignant moment bridging past and present. Doonside grew. Subdivisions bloomed, transforming the landscape. The Crawford Estate and the Doonside Station Estate offered dreams of homeownership. The echoes of the past linger at the Bungarribee Homestead Site, a heritage-listed testament to Doonside’s rich history. Today, Doonside boasts two primary schools, Doonside Public School and Crawford Public School, nurturing young minds. Doonside Technology High School, once simply Doonside High School, stands as a hub of learning. Featherdale Wildlife Park, a haven of native Australian creatures, draws visitors from afar. Nurragingy Reserve, a sprawling 90-hectare park, offers a sanctuary of bushland and picnic grounds. Doonside, a tapestry woven with threads of Scottish heritage, Aboriginal roots, and the steady march of progress.
