“Have you ever wondered how a rock could resemble an imperial jade seal?” That’s the question Yuk Saai Shek poses. We’re standing at the end of the Mini Great Wall on Cheung Chau Island in Hong Kong. This isn’t just any rock. It’s Yuk Saai Shek, a famous landmark shaped by time and the elements.

The Mini Great Wall isn’t actually a great wall but a hiking trail. It got its name from the granite railings that line parts of the path. These railings give hikers the feeling of walking along a miniature version of the Great Wall of China. The trail stretches about 850 meters along the headland of Chi Ma Hang.

As you walk this trail keep your eyes peeled. You will see many uniquely-shaped rocks. Locals have given descriptive names to these granite formations. Look out for the Loaf Rock, resembling a loaf of bread. Listen for the Rock of Ringing Bell. Spot the Eagle Rock and the Human Head Rock.

But the highlight of the Mini Great Wall is undoubtedly Yuk Saai Shek. This rock marks the trail’s end. Its shape is special. Yuk Saai Shek looks like an imperial jade seal. This is where it gets its name.

How did Yuk Saai Shek get its unique form? The answer lies in weathering. Two types of weathering are at play. First, there is honeycomb weathering. Salt sprays from seawater dissolve minerals in the rock, creating a pitted surface that resembles a honeycomb. Second, granular disintegration contributes. Different minerals expand and contract at different rates with temperature changes. This causes grains to loosen and fall away.

Yuk Saai Shek is a testament to nature’s artistry. It shows how wind, rain, and sea can sculpt stone into surprising shapes. As you admire Yuk Saai Shek remember that you are also enjoying amazing sea views. Take in the panoramic vista. The South China Sea stretches out before you. Yuk Saai Shek offers more than just a unique rock formation. It provides a stunning viewpoint to appreciate the beauty of Cheung Chau.
