Ever wondered about the colossal ships gliding into Vancouver’s harbour? Centerm plays a crucial role in this maritime ballet. Right here before us stands Centerm Centennial Terminals a major container port. It’s not just a place for loading and unloading goods. Centerm’s history is deeply woven into Vancouver’s fabric.

Initially a peninsula where the Hastings Mill once stood it was transformed. Building rubble was dumped on the foreshore. This created a massive terminal. This happened in 1958 thanks to Barney Johnson and Federal funding. It marked British Columbia’s Centennial year hence the name Centerm.

For many years Canadian Stevedoring and its subsidiary Casco Terminals managed Centerm. The 1990s brought a series of acquisitions. Since 2006 DP World Canada a subsidiary of Dubai’s DP World has overseen its operations.

Centerm boasts impressive infrastructure. Two berths stretch 647 metres. Their depth reaches 15.5 metres. Seven ship-to-shore cranes ensure efficient operations. Both CN and CPKC Canadian Class 1 Railways directly serve Centerm. ILWU Locals 500 and 514 form the majority of its workforce.

A remarkable expansion project recently concluded. Completed in Spring 2023 it cost $350 million. This boosted the terminal’s footprint by 15%. It significantly increased annual throughput. The capacity jumped from 900,000 to 1.5 million TEUs.

Centerm isn’t just about numbers. It’s a vital artery for Vancouver’s economy and a symbol of international trade. Its story is a testament to human ingenuity. It’s also a story of constant evolution and adaptation in a dynamic global landscape. So as you stand here contemplate Centerm. It’s more than just a port. It’s a vital link in a global network of commerce. A silent giant connecting Vancouver to the world.
