Thousands have passed through its doors since 1993. We’re standing before the Meridian Arts Centre. It stands as a testament to Toronto’s diverse community.

The Meridian Arts Centre began with a vision. It was to create a space that embodies harmony and vitality. This vision embraces both innovation and tradition.

Originally, this place was named the North York Performing Arts Centre when it opened in 1993. Eberhard Zeidler, a Canadian architect, designed it. The idea was for musicals, theatre, and more. A year later, it became the Ford Centre for the Performing Arts. Later, it was known as the Toronto Centre for the Arts. Finally, in September 2019, it became the Meridian Arts Centre.

Initially, the Meridian Arts Centre housed three theatres. There was the Main Stage Theatre with 1,727 seats. The George Weston Recital Hall had 1,036 seats. Finally, the Studio Theatre had 200 seats.

The Main Stage has seen many famous productions. “Sunset Boulevard” by Andrew Lloyd Webber played here in 1995. A 1993 production of “Show Boat” even moved to Broadway. From 2008 to 2010, “Jersey Boys” also called this stage home.

In 2015, the city approved a new organization. It consolidated the governance of several arts venues. These included the Meridian Hall, St. Lawrence Centre, and the Meridian Arts Centre. They all came under the direction of TO Live.

After 2010, the Main Stage struggled to find tenants. So, from 2014 to 2016, it underwent renovations. The Main Stage was divided into two smaller theatres. The Greenwin Theatre seats 296 and was built on the original stage. The Lyric Theatre seats 576 and features color-changing LED panels.

The Meridian Arts Centre is easily accessible. It is located between two subway stations. These are the Sheppard and North York Centre stations. Ample parking is available. Special needs parking is near the entrance.

The Meridian Arts Centre has hosted many world-class shows. These shows include performances by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. It is also home to the Harold Green Jewish Theatre Company.

The Meridian Arts Centre continues to welcome patrons. It offers multi-disciplinary arts programming for all ages. The Education and Engagement programme is also a key part. It shows its commitment to the arts community and its neighbors. Whether you are a first-time guest or a returning patron, the Meridian Arts Centre hopes your experience is enjoyable and memorable. The Meridian Arts Centre remains a beacon. It celebrates the arts and community in the heart of Toronto.
