Whispers of hidden treasures echo through the Eurener Wald. Before you stands the Sogenanntes Tempelherrenkloster. Or rather what remains of it. This isn’t your typical monastery. Legends shroud its past. Local lore paints a picture of Knights Templar. Not the pious monks you might imagine. These Templars were allegedly involved in robbery and pillage. They supposedly hid vast riches here. They even supposedly used a clever trick to escape pursuit. They reversed their horseshoes. This slowed their pursuers down.

The Sogenanntes Tempelherrenkloster isn’t actually confirmed to be a Templar monastery. There is no historical evidence. It is what it says it is: a so-called Templar monastery. However the name stuck. The local people tell these stories. They passed down through generations. Archaeological evidence suggests a medieval settlement. Possibly even Roman foundations predate the structure. The ruins suggest a large complex. About 600 paces in diameter. This includes a round tower remnants of a ring wall and a large pond.

Sadly most of the original stones were reused. They were used to build the Sankt Jakobshospital in Trier. Imagine the size of the original structures. Early 19th century accounts mention window stones 12 feet high. Large building stones were gradually removed. It’s a poignant reminder of how time and human needs reshape history. The remaining walls are only a few centimeters high. You can still see the outlines of the buildings. These match an old ground plan. Three main ruin areas can be clearly identified.

The brothers Elmar and Ernst Herresthal surveyed the Sogenanntes Tempelherrenkloster in 2014. They confirmed the layout of the ruins. It’s fascinating to stand here and consider what once was. To consider those legends. The whispered secrets of untold wealth hidden in subterranean vaults. The tale of the reversed horseshoes. Even tales of abundant wine left behind in the hasty retreat.

Many such Templar stories are strikingly similar across different regions. Their commonalities fuel the imagination. They invite you to contemplate the power of myth. The enduring mystery of this site’s past. While historical accuracy is debatable the stories of the Sogenanntes Tempelherrenkloster endure. They weave a captivating narrative of this enigmatic place. It’s a testament to the enduring power of legend. A power that transforms a ruined site into something deeply compelling. Something that continues to inspire awe and wonder.
