Once upon a time Leary School served a very special purpose. Founded in 1964 by Al and Barbara Leary it addressed an urgent need. What was that need? It supported students facing emotional behavioral and learning difficulties.
Imagine a time when special education wasn’t a given. Leary School stepped in to fill that void. It became a haven for students who needed a different kind of support.
Leary School began its journey with a clear mission. It aimed to provide tailored education to students who struggled in traditional settings. Al and Barbara Leary recognized that these students required unique approaches to thrive.
Initially Leary School operated several programs in Northern Virginia. These included two day schools located in Falls Church and Alexandria. There was also a residential center in Winchester. This center later transformed into Timber Ridge School.
As laws evolved Leary School adapted. The mid-1970s brought legislation guaranteeing the right to special education. Public school districts started referring students to Leary.
Always innovating Leary School introduced its “jobsite” vocational program in the 1980s. Students gained hands-on experience by building and renovating houses initially in Fairfax. This program provided practical skills.
The 1990s marked an era of expansion for Leary School. It extended its reach into Maryland establishing a school in Prince George’s County. The Lincolnia Educational Foundation was created to oversee the schools. This occurred after the original leadership retired.
Leary School’s commitment to vocational training continued. Jobsites were established in Loudoun County Virginia in 2006. Then in 2009 another jobsite opened in Brandywine Maryland.
The early 2000s brought new challenges. Public schools developed their own special education programs. Referrals to Leary School decreased. Financial difficulties ultimately led to its closure in 2010.
Even though the school closed its doors its legacy lived on. Leary School’s vocational programs were transferred to the Phillips Program in Annandale Virginia.
Leary School played a pivotal role in special education. It offered hope and opportunity to students who needed it most. Its innovative programs and dedicated staff left a lasting impact. The story of Leary School reminds us of the importance of inclusive education. It highlights the need to support all students in reaching their full potential.
