Over 45000 specimens. That’s the impressive number of rocks minerals fossils and meteorites housed within the Museu de Geociências. This isn’t just any museum. This is the Museu de Geociências at the University of São Paulo.

The Museu de Geociências is more than just a collection. It’s a living testament to the history of Earth sciences in Brazil. It all began in 1934. Professor Ettore Onorato spearheaded the creation of a mineralogy museum. This was back when the university was still the Faculdade de Filosofia Ciências e Letras. Professor Onorato’s personal collection formed the core of the museum. Over time other significant collections were added. The Araújo Ferraz collection joined in 1935. Then came Luiz Paixão’s collection in 1954. Finally Carlos Luiz Schnyder’s donation in 1984 further enriched the museum’s holdings.

The Museu de Geociências wasn’t always open to the public. Initially it served primarily as a teaching and research resource for the university’s geology students. The museum became a hands-on laboratory for practical lessons. It wasn’t until 1991 that its doors opened to the wider community. The museum even underwent a major renovation in the late 1990s thanks to funding from FAPESP. The renovation aimed to make the museum more educational and comfortable for visitors.

But the Museu de Geociências is not just about the past. It actively engages with the present and future. It hosts school groups offering educational programs and guided tours. Since 2004 trained monitors lead these visits. This makes learning fun and accessible for visitors of all ages. The museum also offers special programs for children and teachers during school breaks. A special area caters to visually impaired visitors with tactile samples. The museum’s collection includes the third-largest meteorite in Brazil the Itapuranga weighing a hefty 624 kilograms. It also features a full-size replica of an Allosaurus fragilis. There’s even a unique and complete specimen of the pterosaur Tupandactylus navigans. You won’t find this anywhere else in the world.

The Museu de Geociências has a large collection. However most of the specimens are not on display. They are stored in the technical reserve. This is on the ground floor of the Institute of Geosciences. The museum’s dedication to preserving its collection is unwavering. They maintain ideal conditions for their samples. This protects them from damage caused by light temperature and humidity. Even the air quality is carefully controlled.

The Museu de Geociências isn’t just a repository of artifacts. It’s a dynamic hub for learning research and community engagement. So come explore the wonders of the Earth. Explore the rich history of our planet at this remarkable institution. The Museu de Geociências.
