Vanadislunden’s rolling hills whisper tales of Stockholm’s past. This isn’t just any park. Vanadislunden is a nine-hectare green heart beating in the city’s bustling Vasastaden district. Imagine the transformation. In the mid-1880s Stockholm exploded with growth. This area then known as Ormträskhöjden or Snake Lake Heights was a bleak and impoverished place. Locals even nicknamed it Sibirien Siberia due to its cold and desolate nature. But a vision took hold. Around 1893 approximately 2000 trees and shrubs were planted. Thousands of horse-drawn carts hauled soil and waste to create the park’s undulating landscape. By 1903 much of Vanadislunden was complete although the young trees needed time to grow into the lush space we see today.
The park wasn’t just a beautification project. It was part of Albert Lindhagen’s ingenious urban planning strategy. He envisioned green spaces atop Stockholm’s hills. This was cheaper than levelling the rocky terrain for construction. It also brought light and nature into the rapidly growing city. Vanadislunden perfectly embodies this vision.
Hidden within Vanadislunden lies a fascinating secret a water reservoir. Built between 1913 and 1918 this castle-like structure holds 8100 cubic meters of water. Architect Gustaf Améen designed this impressive feat of engineering. It stands atop pillars within an older reservoir built in 1879.
Atop a hill in the northwest stands Anders Jönsson’s sculpture Flicka i aftonsol Girl in the Evening Sun. This 1955 artwork adds to the park’s artistic appeal. Further south St Stephen’s Church Stefanskyrkan stands proudly. Completed in 1904 it boasts a Carl Eldh crucifix and a striking triptych by Einar Forseth. The original wooden church from 1899 was moved to Aspudden and renamed St Sigfrid’s Church.
