Po Chü-i faced banishment to Kiukiang. This was after criticizing officials. His enemies seized an opportunity to silence him. His mother’s death was used against him. He had written poems about flowers and a well. This was deemed a lack of filial piety.
Later, he became Governor of Chung-chou. Chung-chou delighted him with its flowers and trees. In 821, Emperor Mou Tsung’s misgovernment led to Po’s removal from the capital again. This time, he became Governor of Hangchow.
In 831, Yuan Chen passed away. Po Chü-i spent his remaining years in retirement. He repaired the Hsiang-shan monastery. He called himself the Hermit of Hsiang-shan.
Po Chü-i’s poetry is known for its simplicity. He valued content over form. He aimed to restore poetry. He wanted to raise it to its proper intellectual level. His poems were widely popular. People inscribed them everywhere.
Even in Japan his reputation was big. Writers borrowed from him. He became a Shinto deity.
