Did you know that Weimarhallenpark was once a princely garden? This beautiful park in Weimar’s Nordvorstadt has a history spanning centuries. It began as a simple orchard centuries ago. Then it became part of the estate of Friedrich Justin Bertuch a prominent figure in classical Weimar. Bertuch’s influence is subtly woven into the park’s fabric. His family’s modest grave lies near the western wall a surprising contrast to his significance.
The park’s current layout is a result of larger-scale urban planning. Weimar’s city architect August Lehrmann oversaw the transformation of the Asbach-Grünzug area. The Weimarhalle a major congress center now gives the park its name. Construction began only in the 1930s. The construction actually destroyed the direct connection between the Bertuchhaus and the park.
Before the Weimarhalle the park had a different character. A shell-stone and travertine wall once enclosed it. This wall was largely demolished in the 1970s. Only fragments remain. The park’s central pond boasts a Baroque-style wall and cascade. It has a clear West-East alignment reflecting careful design.
Today Weimarhallenpark thrives as a vibrant cultural space. It hosts an annual open-air classical music concert. A special floating stage is built for this event. In the park’s northeastern corner a contemporary art gallery resides in a renovated gardener’s house. It offers a mix of exhibitions readings discussions and concerts. Its proximity to the Bauhaus Museum is no coincidence. It also reflects the area’s artistic significance. Interestingly the park also includes the UNESCO Platz which was added in 1999.
The park has interesting water features too. A playful water fountain for children stands near the wall. The water comes from the Rabenwäldchen a small woodland nearby. Nearby a water staircase cascades down. Its water comes from the Lottenbach stream. The staircase’s construction was part of the Asbach-Grünzug project.
