Who’s a good boy? Spotty is. Spotty the Dog that is. Right here in Retreat Cape Town. This isn’t just any dog statue. This is a legend. He’s been watching over Main Road for over eighty years.

The story begins in the late 1930s. A musician named Ralph Barnes and his wife Enid arrived from Canada. Ralph joined the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra. He dreamed of making records. That dream didn’t pan out. So he and his friend Ben van Niekerk built something else. Something amazing. They built Spotty.

Hidden behind hessian screens they toiled. Ralph hauled bricks cement and timber from Cape Concrete Works. In 1938 the screens came down. There he stood a two-storey-high white dog with black spots. The Spotty Dog roadhouse was born.

Imagine the scene. The area was bush. No Blue Route Mall. Just Spotty. A haven for hungry travelers between Wynberg and Muizenberg. Miranda and Davy Smeda remember the best ice cream and hot dogs on the peninsula. Served from a door between Spotty’s legs.

Spotty wasn’t just a restaurant. He was a landmark. A symbol of Retreat. Children knew they were almost home when they saw him. During World War II British sailors from Simon’s Town frequented Spotty. They even played pranks painting his spots and nose.

Spotty’s head was hollow. Made of chicken wire plaster and whitewash. His creator Ralph maintained him carefully. He repainted every crack. Winter rains could cause the wire to rust. In 1947 Ralph died. Enid kept Spotty running. Then in 1963 she sold the roadhouse.

One stormy night Spotty’s jaw fell off. Repairs changed his expression. People called him the Dog with the Hot Head. A hot water cylinder was inside his head. Then in 1972 tragedy struck. A runaway lorry crashed into Spotty nearly demolishing him.

Despite a petition Spotty was beyond repair. Children collected pieces of the original. But his story wasn’t over. In 1988 Andrew Louw built a new Spotty. A 2.5-meter-tall ferro-cement tribute. This Spotty stands proudly outside Buco hardware store. A smaller puppy stood beside him but vandalism forced its removal.

Today Spotty stands as a testament to perseverance. A reminder of a bygone era. A symbol of the enduring spirit of Retreat. He’s more than just a statue. He’s a beloved friend. He’s Spotty the Dog. A Cape Town icon.
