From the depths of time, Barrandovské skály rises before you. These cliffs whisper tales of ancient seas and dramatic earth-shattering events. Barrandovské skály isn’t just a cliff. It’s a window into Prague’s prehistoric past, a geological wonder of international significance. Officially designated as a National Natural Monument in 1982, Barrandovské skály offers a unique glimpse into the Silurian and Devonian periods. The cliffs showcase a stunning layered rock sequence. They tell a story of evolving landscapes over millions of years. Imagine warm, shallow seas teeming with life. Graptolites, ancient plankton-like creatures, once drifted in these waters. Their fossilized remains are abundant near Vyskočilka, at the southern end of Barrandovské skály. As you walk along the path, the rock formations shift. The dark shale and limestone of the Silurian give way to the lighter, granular limestone of the Devonian. Here, at Barrandova skála itself, the rock layers are dramatically folded and faulted. This is the result of the Variscan orogeny, a mountain-building event that reshaped the landscape. Barrandovské skály has been a site of geological study since at least 1884 when the quarry owner, Max Herbert, donated part of the cliffs to the National Museum. A plaque commemorating Joachim Barrande, the renowned geologist who extensively studied the area, was placed here in the same year. The cliffs bear his name to this day. The “U Kapličky” quarry near the northern end of Barrandovské skály is a paleontological treasure trove. It holds the “coral horizon,” a rich deposit of Devonian fossils. These fossils paint a vivid picture of a diverse underwater ecosystem. Imagine crinoids, ancient relatives of starfish, swaying in the currents. Brachiopods, shelled creatures resembling clams, dotted the seafloor alongside corals and trilobites. These remnants of a long-lost world offer a unique insight into the evolution of life on Earth. While the rocks tell a story of the distant past, the cliffs themselves also bear the marks of human history. The old Zbraslav Road, carved out in 1742, and the later railway construction have dramatically altered the face of Barrandovské skály. The terraces above the former quarries, once a popular swimming spot, now stand in ruins, a testament to the passage of time. Today, Barrandovské skály is more than just a geological site. It is a haven for rare and endangered plants, a reminder of the resilient ecosystems that have adapted to this unique landscape. As you gaze upon these ancient cliffs, you are connected to a story that spans millions of years, a story of shifting continents, evolving life, and the enduring power of nature.
