Picture the scene. You stand before the Wöllriederhof. Its history whispers from the stones. This wasn’t always a charming event venue. Centuries ago it was a leper colony.

The Wöllriederhof near Würzburg holds a fascinating story. Its name suggests a settlement near a marshland. The earliest records date back to 1230. Then it was a place of judgment. Later a Papal decree from 1245 reveals its true nature. The Wöllriederhof was a leper colony.

Imagine the lives of those exiled here. Cut off from society they formed a unique community. They had a leader. They even possessed their own seal. It depicted the Madonna and Child. The inscription read Seal of the leper house of Wöllried. This shows their attempts to maintain their identity and dignity despite their condition. The Wöllriederhof was the oldest known leper colony in the Würzburg diocese. The lepers farmed the land supporting themselves and each other. Their land holdings even extended to Effeldorf and Bibergau.

However financial troubles plagued the Wöllriederhof. By 1340 it was heavily in debt. It was transferred to Würzburg’s Bürgerspital. The leper colony was dissolved. Its days as a place of isolation were over. The Bürgerspital needed to secure the site. They obtained a protective letter from Emperor Ludwig IV. This guaranteed the residents safety from harassment by other lords. Disputes with the Würzburg Cathedral Chapter ensued. Eventually Bishop Gerhard von Schwarzburg took over the Wöllriederhof. He turned it into one of his mensal estates. The Bürgerspital received tax exemption for the village of Laub in return.

The Wöllriederhof changed hands many times. It fell into disrepair. Then in 1739 Philipp Adam Ulrich a law professor at Würzburg University took over. He transformed the Wöllriederhof into a model farm. He focused on cultivating potatoes and clover. These crops were revolutionary for the time. They provided more food and improved soil fertility. This was not without its challenges. His innovations met resistance. His ideas were initially considered risky and even foolish by the authorities. But the results spoke for themselves. By 1763 the farm’s productivity was significantly higher. The farm could be rented for a much larger fee.

Ulrich’s work significantly impacted the area. He demonstrated the value of these new crops. This indirectly helped save many people from starvation during times of famine. Franz Oberthür a contemporary described the impact. He claimed thousands of people were saved from starvation by potato and clover cultivation. Oberthür successfully initiated several memorializations in Ulrich’s honor.

The Wöllriederhof has seen further transformations. It was bought by the Hirsch family bankers and financiers. Later it changed hands several more times. Today the Wöllriederhof is once again thriving. It is a vibrant venue for events and businesses. It stands as a testament to its layered history. From leper colony to model farm to modern event center its story is both poignant and remarkable. It reflects the enduring spirit of adaptation and resilience. The Wöllriederhof reminds us of the past while shaping the future.
