Hidden within the walls of Sazava Monastery lies the story of St Procopius. This is not just any chapel. This is the place where the legacy of a hermit priest lives on.

St Procopius a Czech patron saint was a hermit. He lived in a cave under the monastery. He lived there until the end of the 11th century. In 1204 Pope Innocent III declared him a saint. This was because of his life and his miracles.

One miracle involved Prince Ulrich. A passionate hunter the prince met Procopius while thirsty. Procopius gave him water. Miraculously it turned into wine. Impressed Prince Ulrich helped Procopius establish Bohemia’s first Old Slavonic Benedictine monastery.

The monastery itself is a testament to time. Its architecture reflects centuries of history. It spans from 11th-century foundations to Gothic towers and Baroque interiors. Sadly the Hussite wars interrupted the construction of a grand cathedral in 1421.

The Chapter Hall however remains a treasure. It’s one of Bohemia’s finest Gothic halls. Inside 13th-century paintings celebrate the motherhood of Our Lady Mary. These murals were painstakingly restored in the 20th century. This was after they were almost lost when the monastery became private living quarters.

Even today miracles are said to occur at Sazava Monastery. A painting of St Procopius’s face is said to open its eyes periodically. This is considered a miraculous event. The most recent opening was in July.

The monastery’s bells also add to the mystical atmosphere. Legend speaks of 11th-century bells. They are long gone but new bells ring out today. Three bells St Wenceslas St Ludmila and St Procopius ring out. They were gifted in 1992 thanks to Mr Kral.

And finally a legend speaks of three red stone stars on the Gothic bell tower. Find them and make a wish. They say it will come true.

So here we stand before St Procopius’s legacy. A testament to faith miracles and the enduring power of stories. Let the story of St Procopius inspire you.
