Down in the depths of Abisso Massimo lies a subterranean world. This isn’t just any cave. Abisso Massimo is a significant karst feature in the Trieste Karst. Its entrance is unassuming. It’s located near Opicina along the SS202 road. You’ll pass the Coca Cola factory. Then look for a right turn about 200 meters before the next service area.
The Abisso Massimo’s exploration began in 1999. The entrance is marked with a sign. The cave itself is remarkably deep. It plunges 227 meters into the earth. Its total length is 130 meters. The bottom of the abyss reaches a mere 3 meters above sea level.
Imagine descending into Abisso Massimo. You’ll begin with a 60-meter drop. The walls are stunning. Water flowing over the years has created layers of calcite. Ten meters down a lateral shaft branches off. This is the ‘Flower Branch’. It’s named after the many cave flowers adorning its walls. The floor is littered with debris fallen from the ceiling.
From the base of the main shaft three branches extend. Two small shafts lead to a narrow passage. Beyond it a 30-meter drop takes you to a depth of 110 meters. This shaft is long and narrow. The rocks are micrites alternating with nummulitic biomicrites. Constrictions along the shafts likely correspond to more resistant limestone layers.
One branch offers a challenging descent. You’ll go down a series of shafts and narrow passages. At the bottom water pools. This is a perched lake. It doesn’t drain because of clay clogging the drainage point. The water level varies indicating constant underground water movement.
