Six Tokugawa shoguns rest here at Zojoji Temple’s Taitoku-in Mausoleum. This is their final resting place. A significant part of Japanese history lies beneath our feet. The Mausoleum of the Tokugawa Shoguns was once grander. Many structures formed a magnificent complex. It included a main hall and a front shrine. The best technology of its time was used in its construction. Sadly World War II destroyed most of these structures. Only parts of two graves remain. This temple was the family temple of the Tokugawa. Six of the fifteen Tokugawa shoguns are buried here in this sacred ground. The temple itself has a rich history. It was originally founded in 1393.
