Doesn’t the name Lengfeld suggest fields that are long? Lengfeld, a district in the northeast of Würzburg, boasts a history as rich as the crops that once grew here. Today, let’s embark on a journey through time. We will uncover the layers of Lengfeld’s past.

Once an independent municipality, Lengfeld was incorporated into Würzburg in 1978. However, its story begins long before that. Archaeological evidence suggests settlements existed here as far back as 35000 to 8000 BC. Imagine early settlers finding fertile ground.

Lengfeld’s first documented mention dates back to 1230. However, Lengfeld faced devastation during the Battle of Würzburg in 1796. Only seven houses survived the conflict. Lengfeld slowly rebuilt.

By the late 19th century, Lengfeld was a small village. It had around 600 residents towards the end of World War I. Unlike many other areas, Lengfeld was spared during World War II. This led to the establishment of several military hospitals. Even the Bishop of Würzburg sought refuge in Lengfeld during this turbulent period.

The community experienced considerable growth after the war. By 1960, Lengfeld’s population had grown to approximately 1500 residents. This growth paved the way for its eventual integration into Würzburg.

The year 1975 marked a significant moment for Lengfeld. The municipality adopted its own coat of arms. The symbols reflect Lengfeld’s heritage. A heraldic lily on a blue background represents the Ritterstift St. Burkard. Lengfeld once belonged to it. A weintraube symbolizes viticulture documented as far back as the year 1000. A black mill wheel on a golden background represents the Kürnach and Pilziggrunds mills.

Lengfeld has a partnership with the parish of Pacoti in Brazil. This connection highlights Lengfeld’s commitment to global solidarity.

If you seek a deeper understanding of Lengfeld’s past, I recommend the “Chronik Lengfelds”. The Arbeitskreis Lengfelder Geschichte published it. It offers insights into Lengfeld’s evolution. It covers everything from Stone Age finds to its transition into a Würzburg district.

Today, Lengfeld is a vibrant part of Würzburg. In December 2023, the district counted 11,320 inhabitants. It has modern infrastructure and a strong sense of community. The Kürnachtalpark provides a green space for recreation. Here, residents enjoy a playground and nature zone.

Lengfeld is more than just a suburb. It is a place where history and modernity intertwine. It’s a place where community thrives. As we leave Lengfeld, remember its long and varied past. It is a past that has shaped its present.
