Wondering why a Chinese university sits here in Vientiane? That is a great question. Today, we will explore the story of Lao Soochow University.

Lao Soochow University holds a special place in the history of international education. It represents a bold step. It is the first overseas university established by a Chinese university.

Let’s step back to 2007. China and Laos agreed to jointly build a development zone. Suzhou Industrial Park recommended Soochow University to Laos. The Lao government extended an invitation. This marked the beginning of a unique partnership.

After five years of preparation, Lao Soochow University gained approval for two specialties in 2012. These were International Economy and Trade and Finance. The university actively recruited students. The first batch of students began their studies in December 2012.

Initially, Lao Soochow University adopted a special “1+3” cultivation mode. Students spent their first semester learning general courses and Chinese in Laos. For the remaining three years, they studied major courses taught in Chinese at Soochow University in China. Graduates earned dual certificates from China and Laos.

The university later transitioned to a “2+2” mode. It allowed students to complete four years of learning entirely in Laos. More than 190 Lao students have received education here. They have achieved undergraduate or graduate degrees.

Lao Soochow University has gained a strong reputation locally. It is known for its high-quality teaching. It also has rigorous management.

The university plays another key role. It provides Chinese language training. With increasing economic cooperation between China and Laos, “Sinomania” has become popular. Lao Soochow University has responded by offering Chinese language classes. These classes meet the needs of locals seeking to learn Chinese.

Moreover, Lao Soochow University acts as a bridge between China and Laos. It supports Chinese enterprises. It helps them conduct market surveys. It also arranges visits to Lao government departments.

Vice-president Wang Jiexian understood the needs of local enterprises. He recognized the demand for bilingual talents. He believed that Chinese universities needed to “Go Out” to support Chinese enterprises expanding overseas.

Lao Soochow University is more than just an educational institution. It is a symbol of international collaboration. It is a testament to the growing ties between China and Laos. The university is actively shaping the future. It cultivates talents. It promotes economic and social development in the region.
