Have you ever heard of a village that once housed a bustling bakery that supplied the whole district with bread? Doubek, a quaint village nestled in the Prague-East District in the Czech Republic, boasts such a history. Today, Doubek is a small village with a population of around 150 people, but its past is filled with stories of a thriving community.

Imagine, back in the early 20th century, the aroma of freshly baked bread filling the air, wafting out from the two local bakeries, ‘U Zvonídků’ and ‘U Kefurtů’. These bakeries were so well-known for their delicious bread that even people in Prague itself knew about them. The village was not only known for its bread but also for its school, which served the local children from 1907 until 1966, when the school was closed down due to a decline in the number of pupils.

Doubek further boasts a rich footballing tradition, with a football club called ‘TJ Čechie Doubek’, which was established in 1921. The team had to cease activity in 1993 due to a lack of players, but it was revived in 2003 and now competes in the IV. okresní třída (Fourth district class). In 2004, the village even hosted a football tournament, which saw the participation of famous Czech hockey players such as Milan Hnilička, Jaromír Hlinka, and Antonín Panenka. The village was also visited by the talented Czech skier, Aneta Langerová, for an autograph signing.

Doubek’s history is steeped in change and evolution. The village experienced a significant outmigration of young people to Prague in the 1960s, leading to a decline in population. But in the late 1980s, the villagers decided to seek independence from the neighboring village of Babice, and in 1990, Doubek was recognized as a separate municipality. The village’s journey serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of its people, who have navigated periods of growth, decline, and revival, maintaining their unique charm and spirit.
