Do you hear that gentle chanting? That soothing sound emanates from Kougakuji, also known as Kōgakuji Temple. This temple offers solace to many. Kōgakuji is a Buddhist temple of the Soto Zen sect. It is located in Hachioji City Tokyo.

Kōgakuji Temple’s story began in 1592. Ishizaka Tamba no Kami Morimichi established it. He invited Zuiko Nyoetsu to be the founding priest. Morimichi was a vassal of the Takeda family. Ishizaka弥次右衛門尉森信 later supported the temple.

The main deity of Kōgakuji is Yakushi Nyorai. This statue is said to have been found by Morimichi. He found it shining brightly in the mountains. Morimichi dedicated the statue to Takeda Shingen. The Ishizaka family then protected it.

The temple also houses other significant Buddhist figures. Kōtokuin Kannon Bosatsu stands to the right of the main hall. Also, there is Kōtokuin Benzaiten. It is enshrined in a small hall to the left of the main hall.

Kōgakuji offers solace and spiritual enrichment. It provides a space for various cultural activities. These include Sutra copying and tea ceremonies.

Kōgakuji is also known for its Mizuko Kuyo service. This is a ceremony for deceased children. Parents can pray for the well-being of their children. They wish for happiness in the afterlife. The temple also provides eternal memorial services. These services are for those without family to care for their graves. Kōgakuji ensures respectful remembrance.

Facing the main hall a monument honors Ishizaka Yoshitada. Yoshitada was the head of Hachioji. He served as a guard of Nikko Tosho-gu. He protected Tokugawa Ieyasu. Yoshitada committed suicide after being questioned. He was questioned about handing over Nikko Tosho-gu. He maintained the honor of his clan. A stone lantern from Nikko City stands near Yoshitada’s grave. Nikko City became a sister city to Hachioji.

Kōgakuji is more than just a temple. It represents devotion and remembrance. The temple provides spiritual guidance. It also preserves cultural heritage. It connects people to history and faith. The serene atmosphere invites reflection. It offers a peaceful escape from Tokyo. Take a moment to breathe deeply. Let the temple’s tranquility calm you.
