Stretching 7.7 kilometers through suburban Sydney lies a unique green space. This is the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve. It’s more than just a park. It’s a journey through Sydney’s water supply history.

The Lower Prospect Canal Reserve was once a vital part of Sydney’s water system. Back in the 1860s Sydney needed more water. The Upper Nepean Scheme was created. This scheme brought water from distant rivers to Prospect Reservoir. From there the Lower Prospect Canal carried water to Pipehead in Guildford. Construction finished in 1888.

Imagine building this canal by hand. Workers used horses and simple tools. They had to be incredibly precise. The Lower Prospect Canal falls only 77 centimetres over its entire length. This gravity-fed system demanded accuracy.

The Lower Prospect Canal Reserve is also a nature reserve. It protects remnants of the Cumberland Plain Woodland. This woodland is rare in the Sydney basin. Rare and endangered plants thrive here. The local government protects this corridor for conservation.

By the late 1980s the Lower Prospect Canal couldn’t keep up with Sydney’s growing population. It could only carry 100 million gallons a day. In May 1995 the Lower Prospect Canal was replaced with an underground pipeline. This pipeline increased water flow and quality.

But what to do with the old canal? The community stepped in. They wanted to preserve the land. In 1998 the Lower Canal became a public reserve. In August 2003 a cycleway-walkway opened. It runs the full length of the reserve.

As you walk or cycle along the Lower Prospect Canal Reserve notice the path. It follows the course of the former canal. The upper part of the canal wall is visible. This gives you a clear view of the canal’s original path.

Look out for the Greystanes Aqueduct. It is also known as the Boothtown Aqueduct. This impressive structure once carried water across a valley. It has 22 arches. The aqueduct is heritage listed.

Also find the valve house at the head of the Lower Prospect Canal at Prospect Reservoir. This controlled the flow of water from the reservoir into the canal.

The Lower Prospect Canal Reserve is more than just a recreational space. It’s a reminder of Sydney’s engineering past. It shows how the city adapted to provide water for its growing population. It is a State Heritage site. The Lower Prospect Canal Reserve is significant as a key part of the Upper Nepean Scheme.
