High above, the UC Water Tower stands. It is more than just a structure. It is a symbol of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The UC Water Tower, also known as the Lady Tower, has a counterpart. The New Asia Water Tower is known as the Gentleman Tower. These towers were built in the 1970s. They supplied freshwater and saltwater to the university.

Legend says the towers are a couple in love. The Gentleman Tower gazes at the Lady Tower. She shyly looks away. The path between the New Asia and United Colleges is called Lover’s Path. It adds to the towers’ romantic story. The path is narrow so people walk closely together.

The UC Water Tower is no longer used for water supply. Advanced technology made it obsolete. But it remains a vital part of the CUHK landscape. Students have even tried to break into the towers. Security measures make this difficult.

The UC Water Tower has a curvilinear design. This contrasts with the straight lines of the Gentleman Tower. Together, they create a unique visual landmark.

Water pressure was a challenge due to CUHK’s elevated location. A pump house and water tanks were built. The UC Water Tower was part of this system. It helped ensure water supply to the campus.

The top of the UC Water Tower offers panoramic views. But it is usually closed to the public for safety. Special tours have allowed glimpses inside. These tours celebrated the university’s anniversaries.

The United College has several other landmarks. These include the Ming De Mural and the United College Cascade. The Time Capsule and various sculptures also add to the college’s character.

The college motto is “Ming De Xin Min.” It means “make one’s virtues shine and renew the people”.

The UC Water Tower is a reminder of the university’s history. It is a symbol of enduring love. It also embodies the spirit of CUHK. Its presence enriches the campus. It inspires students and visitors alike. The UC Water Tower stands tall overlooking Tolo Harbour. It is a testament to CUHK’s past and present.
