MDEM is the Maryland Department of Emergency Management. The Maryland legislature created it. Its mission is simple. MDEM prepares the state for large emergencies. MDEM coordinates Maryland’s response. This applies to any major emergency or disaster.
MDEM supports local governments. It also works with FEMA. FEMA is the Federal Emergency Management Agency. MDEM partners with other federal agencies too.
MDEM’s authority comes from Maryland law. This law establishes MDEM. It ensures Maryland prepares for emergencies. These emergencies must exceed local capabilities. The law also lets local areas create their own emergency offices. Maryland has 26 local emergency management offices. These include all 23 counties. Annapolis Baltimore and Ocean City also have offices. The governor gains special powers during emergencies too. The governor can waive state laws. This helps emergency response operations.
MDEM has three main divisions. They are Disaster Risk Reduction Consequence Management and Mission Support. This structure helps MDEM support local areas.
