Whispers of history echo within these adobe walls. Here stands Cristo Rey Catholic Church, a symphony in mud, a testament to faith and community. Cristo Rey isn’t just a church; it’s a living story, woven from the very earth it stands on. In 1939, Archbishop R. A. Gerken envisioned a new church for Santa Fe’s east side, a beacon to commemorate 400 years since the Spanish arrival in New Mexico. The community rallied, 123 local men laboring alongside famed architect John Gaw Meem. They shaped 180,000 adobes, transforming mud and straw into a magnificent structure. Cristo Rey Catholic Church, completed in 1940, became the heart of a vibrant parish. It was designed in the Pueblo Revival style, echoing the spirit of New Mexico’s historic missions. The church’s massive walls, some stretching nine feet thick, embrace a nave 125 feet long and 40 feet wide. Two hundred twenty-two pine vigas, some an impressive 45 feet long, support the roof, a testament to the scale of the project. But the true jewel of Cristo Rey Catholic Church is its reredos, the Reredos of Our Lady of Light. This magnificent altar screen, carved in 1761, had journeyed from a military chapel on the Plaza, then spent decades hidden within the cathedral. Now, it found its rightful home, its intricate carvings of saints, angels, and flowers illuminated by the sunlight streaming through the clerestory. The reredos is more than just an artwork; it’s a window into history, a piece of 18th-century New Mexico preserved within these very walls. Cristo Rey Catholic Church is more than just adobe and wood. It’s a testament to the enduring power of community, a place where history whispers from every corner.
