The most striking landmark is the former Callan Park Hospital. Built on land acquired from the Callan Estates this psychiatric hospital was a significant structure. Designed by James Barnet the government architect it was based on an asylum in Kent. The hospital incorporated the principles of Dr Kirkbride a prominent American psychiatrist. Completed in 1884 it was known as the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane until 1914. The main section the Kirkbride complex a cluster of sandstone buildings is listed on the Register of the National Estate.
The Kirkbride complex later housed the Sydney College of the Arts. Hospital functions were then moved to western buildings. These buildings are now known as Rozelle Hospital. The construction of the City West Link Road in the 1990s dramatically altered Lilyfield. The road effectively split the suburb in two. This disruption impacted the sense of community almost leading to Lilyfield’s absorption into neighboring suburbs.
Orange Grove a small locality within Lilyfield is centred around Orange Grove Plaza. This area shares its name with a primary school a market and a pub. It’s conveniently served by the Inner West Light Rail. Lilyfield boasts a number of heritage-listed sites including the Callan Park Hospital Broughton Hall and White’s Creek Aqueduct.
