Its initial aim? To meet the growing need for skilled translators and interpreters. This was especially true for the burgeoning post-war industries and commerce. The newly formed European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) also demanded their expertise. The ECSC was a precursor to the EU. It fueled the school’s practical industrial focus. The school trained individuals to navigate new trade agreements. They were crucial for the construction of new factories funded by the ECSC.

By 1962 it evolved. It became the “Scuola a fini speciali di Lingue Moderne per Traduttori ed Interpreti di Conferenze”. This school could now grant a legally recognized diploma. Under the directorship of Claudio Calzolari. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Commerce. The school flourished for 16 years. The language program expanded. Russian Serbian Croatian Slovenian and Dutch were added to English French German and Spanish. This underscored the school’s connection to both its local region and the wider European Economic Community.

In 1978 it achieved university status. It officially became the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori. For eleven years it was unique in Italy. A testament to its pioneering role in language education.
