The sun dips low casting long shadows across the sleek lines of Vila Zaoralek. This isn’t just a house it’s a testament to a time when function and beauty danced in perfect harmony.

Vila Zaoralek stands as a prime example of Ladislav Zak’s functionalist genius. Built in 1932 for Dr Hugo Zaoralek a section head at the Ministry of Education this medium-sized house was a prototype for collective living. Zak a student of Josef Gočar at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts was fascinated by Bauhaus and Dutch rationalism. He infused those influences into Vila Zaoralek’s design.

The villa’s open floor plan is a remarkable feature. The expansive living room connects seamlessly with the garden. This direct connection was considered strikingly unusual even among other Baba houses. Zak prioritized functionality and natural light. He achieved this by incorporating large rooms and bright facades punctuated by strip windows.

Notice the subtle nautical touches. Zak’s designs often included rounded shapes and porthole-like windows. Though less dramatic than the captain’s bridge he added to the Herain villa these details enhance Vila Zaoralek’s charm. The upstairs bathroom was even outfitted with gym equipment directly accessible to a sun deck. This unique combination promoted both physical and mental well-being an innovative concept for its time.

Sadly the villa’s story takes a turn after the Zaoralek family left Prague in 1968. The villa passed to Bohumil Šimon a former Deputy Prime Minister. He made significant alterations. He bricked up all the terraces drastically diminishing the villa’s original character. These changes showcase the unfortunate impact that later owners sometimes had on these architectural gems.

Despite this Vila Zaoralek remains a remarkable example of Czech functionalist architecture. It whispers tales of a brilliant architect his visionary design and a family’s life before political upheaval altered the course of history. Its legacy stands as a reminder of the past. A stark lesson to preserve our architectural heritage.
