A cut-out cross. That’s the first thing you notice about Lynn Valley Full Gospel Church. It’s a striking detail above the entrance. This isn’t just any church. Lynn Valley Full Gospel Church has a rich history. It began not here in North Vancouver but in downtown Vancouver. An expansion of the 1955 Home Missions from the Vancouver Evangelistic Tabernacle it started small. A Christian woman Mrs Shier shared her faith door to door. Children’s meetings were even held in a storefront.
Imagine the humble beginnings. The transition to North Vancouver marked a significant step. The first building was on a different lot at 2626 East 29th Street. It wasn’t until December 21 1960 that the church became a separate society. Five years later land was purchased at the current location. A small temporary building was erected. The dream was always a larger facility.
The mid-1980s saw a significant expansion. The Evangelistic Tabernacle and the Apostolic Church of Pentecost joined forces. On November 5 1982 Lynn Valley Full Gospel Church became independent. The property deeds were transferred. The church also embarked on a joint project with condominiums and a professional center built next door. Construction began in early 1986.
Today Lynn Valley Full Gospel Church or Valley Church as it’s affectionately known thrives. Its multi-racial and inter-generational congregation numbers 400-450 on Sundays. Since the late 1980s it added another Sunday service. The church’s structure has evolved recognizing the leadership of elders and empowering members in various ministries. Since 2000 it’s been developing a cell church model. Members meet in smaller groups throughout the week then gather for Sunday worship. The aim is to foster stronger connections and a vibrant faith community. The distinctive cross remains a symbol of its enduring presence in Lynn Valley. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community growth.
