Masjid As-Sunnah

Step into the Garbergasse, a charming little street in the heart of Vienna. It’s not a place where one would expect to find Masjid As-Sunnah. It was founded in 2010, and it’s a member of the Arab Culture Association (AKG). In 2018, the mosque, along with five other AKG facilities, was closed down by the Austrian government, due to concerns about extremist activity. This decision was quickly contested and overturned by the Vienna regional court, allowing the mosque to reopen its doors. It’s a reminder of the delicate balance between security and religious freedom, the struggle of Muslims seeking to practice their faith. Today, Masjid As-Sunnah continues to serve its community, offering a sanctuary for prayers and a space for spiritual growth. Though the mosque’s size is modest, the warmth and welcoming atmosphere are profound. Muslims of all backgrounds find solace and a sense of belonging in this place.
