Why is there a bronze statue of a man pulling a beer tap in this cozy beer garden? This, my friends, is the Lommi-Brunnen. It’s a tribute to Hans Lommerzheim, the legendary owner of the Lommi pub right here. This place was legendary, a true Cologne institution. Lommerzheim ran the Lommi for over 45 years, from 1959 until his retirement in 2004. He was known for his gruff charm, his dedication to his regulars, and his incredibly thick pork chops. The Lommi was a true time capsule, with a decor that hardly changed in all the years Lommerzheim ran it. There was no music, no TV, not even a cash register! Lommerzheim added up the beer tabs in his head. It was this authenticity and Lommerzheim’s unique personality that made the Lommi a beloved spot for locals and tourists alike. Even Bill Clinton, during the 1999 World Economic Summit, wanted to experience this Cologne institution. However, when told he’d have to close the pub to the public for security reasons, Lommerzheim simply said, “Nope, that’s not gonna work.” He wouldn’t leave his regulars in the lurch, not even for the President of the United States. That was Lommi, a man who stuck to his principles and his love for a good Kölsch beer. And that’s why he is honored with this fountain today.
