Picture this. You stand before Sully Historic Site. A grand three-story house greets you. It sits on rolling hills. This isn’t just any house. It’s a window into late 18th-century life. A time when Richard Bland Lee. Northern Virginia’s first congressman lived here. He built Sully in 1794. He used a land grant from Lord Fairfax.

Sully Historic Site is more than just a house. It’s a sprawling 130-acre estate. Think smokehouses. Think stone dairies. Think a separate kitchen and wash house. All carefully preserved. They tell a story. A story of agriculture. It shows the lives of many families who lived and worked here. For over 200 years. It’s a story of farming. A story of daily life. A story of a gentleman’s country home.

But the story of Sully isn’t just about the Lees. Nine other families called this place home. They contributed to its history. They left their mark on the land. They adapted the buildings. The Park Authority meticulously restored Sully. This was a long and dedicated process. It began in 1959. It opened regularly to visitors in 1975. The restoration was painstaking. Experts recreated paint colors and carpets. Even the window hangings. Much of the furniture is original. The Lee family generously donated many pieces.

The house even almost didn’t survive. Dulles Airport’s construction threatened Sully. It was slated for demolition. But thankfully. An act of Congress stepped in. It saved this important piece of history. Eddie Wagstaff played a crucial role. He was the last private owner’s caretaker. He fought for Sully. He even established the Sully Foundation in 1969. It funds furnishings and special projects to this day.

Today Sully is thriving. It’s accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It’s a site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. It tells the story of enslaved people. It allows visitors to experience the past. It’s a place where history comes alive. You can learn about farm life. You can even churn butter or make ice cream. Sully is a jewel. A testament to preservation. And a must-see destination. It’s a place where the past meets the present. It connects us to our history. It reminds us of the people who came before. It shows how they lived. It reminds us of the importance of preserving our past. You can practically feel the history here.
