The Museu Barão de Mauá was inaugurated on November 6 1982 by Mayor Dorival Rezende. It was named in honor of the city’s patron. It was believed that the Barão once lived in this very house. However this fact has never been proven. The attribution of the house to the Barão is the reason it was preserved.

The house itself is an architectural marvel. It is an authentic bandeirista house dating back to the early 18th century. The Museu Barão de Mauá was constructed using the taipa de pilão technique. This method involves preparing clay with various elements. These elements include stones pieces of wood and even horsehair. The mixture was poured between wooden planks and then compacted. After drying in the sun the planks were removed forming a sturdy wall.

Inside the Museu Barão de Mauá you will find a collection of about 10000 items. The Museu Barão de Mauá includes photographs books and various objects. Most of these items relate to the history of Mauá and the ABC Paulista region. The museum serves as a vital center for historical research in the city. It is responsible for preserving and promoting Mauá’s memory.

At the entrance of the Museu Barão de Mauá there is a bust of Irineu Evangelista de Souza. He is of course the Barão de Mauá. It bears the inscription “The Municipality of Mauá and its People honor the illustrious Brazilian Irineu Evangelista de Souza.”

Inside the museum there is a diverse collection. It includes old domestic objects porcelains coins and cédulas. Also on display are stamps indigenous artifacts and other works of art. A library of about 1500 volumes includes books on art history Irineu Evangelista de Souza and the railroad.

The Museu Barão de Mauá also features a small oratory. This contains sacred images for devotion and prayer. An image of Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição is also here. This image is linked to the construction of the Igreja Matriz de Mauá.
