Imagine sunlight dancing on the Djurgårdsbrunnskanal. Here before us stands Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott. It is more than just a building. It is a testament to Swedish paddling history.

Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott also known as FKI or Stockholm Canoe Club is the oldest canoe club in Sweden. It was founded in 1900. This precedes the national canoe organization Svenska Kanotförbundet. The club predates it by four years.

Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott has been at the heart of Swedish canoeing since its inception. The club pioneered paddling and canoe sailing in Sweden. Carl Smith inspired this. He was a Swedish naval officer. John MacGregor’s canoe tour also inspired it. His tour was from Kristiania to Stockholm in 1866.

The club is located on Måsholmen. It is a small island near Djurgården in central Stockholm. This location has been its base for many years. From here, members explore the waterways.

Many club members have designed innovative canoes. Sven Thorell, Gerhard Högborg and Arvid Rosengren are examples. Nils-Göran Bennich-Björkman also contributed. These designs helped shape modern canoeing.

R. C. Anderson was an early member. He was a British maritime historian. Anderson wrote about his canoe tours in Nordic waters.

Since 1902, Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott has arranged Djurgårdsloppet. It is a 9 km kayak race around Djurgården island. Djurgårdsloppet is one of Sweden’s oldest sports competitions.

Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott promotes canoeing. It has two sections. One is for canoe paddling. The other is for canoe sailing. Sailing includes A-, B-, C-, D/E- and IC-canoes.

The club has hosted many Swedish championships. These include paddling and canoe sailing. They arranged SM in canoe sailing in 1960. They also did so in 1970, 1975, 1980, 1998 and 2012. Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott has achieved international success. This is especially true with IC-canoes.

Other events include Hunduddsregattan. This is a canoe sailing event. It is in collaboration with Vikingarnas Segel Sällskap. FKI Hornet includes both canoe sailing and paddling.

Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott was originally located near Djurgårdsbrunnsviken. This area is now Nobelparken. In 1912, the club moved to Måsholmen. The members decided to call the island Måsholmen.

In 1924, Fritiof Santesson was chairman. He and Sven Thorell represented Sweden. Four countries formed the first international canoe federation. It was called the Internationella Representantskapet for Kanotidrott.

The focus of Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott has changed. Members spent many years on long trips with sailing canoes. At other times, competition has been lively. Since the 1990s, the number of canoe paddlers has increased.

Gregori Aminoff, Nils-Göran Bennich-Björkman and Erik Boström were members. Josef Hammar, Gerhard Högborg and Herman Lantz were also members. Arvid Rosengren, Karl Rudberg and Fritiof Santesson contributed. Carl Smith, Sven Thorell and Olle Verner were also members.

Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott has published the Kanotidrott series since 1906. The fourth edition celebrated 150 years. This commemorated John MacGregor’s journey from Kristiania to Stockholm in 1866.

So let us take a moment to appreciate Föreningen för Kanot-Idrott. It is a cornerstone of Swedish canoeing. It continues to inspire paddlers. It preserves the rich history of the sport.
