Before the modern city of Thimphu grew into the bustling capital we see today, the area was once dominated by small villages and communities. One such place was Kawang Gewog, a rural settlement that played a crucial role in the early development of the city.

Kawang Gewog was originally a collection of villages nestled in the fertile valleys surrounding Thimphu. The name itself, in Dzongkha, means “valley” or “lowland,” reflecting its location. The Gewog was traditionally known for its agricultural abundance, supporting a vibrant community of farmers. They lived among the lush green valleys and harvested the rich bounty of the land. Life was slow and simple, driven by the rhythm of the seasons and the needs of the land. But the villages were also steeped in history and tradition, with countless temples and monastery buildings dotting the landscape.

There are several fascinating temples and monasteries you might want to visit during your stay in Kawang Gewog. One of them is the famous Phajoding Monastery, situated high up in the mountains. It is a popular pilgrimage destination for devout Bhutanese, offering a peaceful retreat for contemplation. The temple of Thujidra is also of cultural significance, believed to be a place of great power and spiritual significance. Its name translates to “the great mountain of lightning,” which is believed to represent the fierce and powerful deity that reigns over this space.

The Kawang Gewog has witnessed the transformation of Bhutan from a rural kingdom to a modern nation. Today, while some areas of the Gewog remain relatively untouched, parts have been integrated into the expanding urban landscape of Thimphu. The area is still known for its peaceful atmosphere and the traditional Bhutanese way of life that persists here.

As you walk through this area, try to imagine the life of the people who lived here before. Think of the farmers working their fields, the monks chanting their prayers in the temples, and the children playing in the valleys. You will learn of a way of life that once thrived in this part of the country, now preserved within its architecture and the spirit of its people.
